    MINOR PROGRAM REGULATION


     

    Purpose

    Article 1-(1) The purpose of a minor program is to allow academically successful undergraduate students in a major program to become knowledgeable in a different subject they are interested in within the scope of another undergraduate program.

    (2) The Minor Program allows academically successful undergraduate students, given that they meet the anticipated requirements, to take limited number of courses on a specific subject and get a minor program certificate if they succeed. The Minor Program does not mean a separate undergraduate degree program.

     

    Scope

    Article 2-(1) This Regulation includes provisions regarding student applications, admissions, registration, and education concerning the minor programs conducted at Izmir university of Economics.

     

     

    Definitions

    Article 3- (1) The references in this regulation are as follows:

    1. ECTS: European Credit Transfer System,
    2. Head of Department: Heads of academic departments at Izmir University of Economics,
    3. DMP: The second undergraduate program which successful undergraduate students at IUE are concurrently enrolled in,

     ç)    GPA:  Grade Point Average,

    1. Faculty/School Board Concerned: Boards of faculties/schools affiliated to Izmir University of Economics,
    2. Faculty/School Administrative Board Concerned: Administrative boards of faculties/schools affiliated to Izmir University of Economics,
    3. Board of Trustees: The Board of Trustees of Izmir University of Economics,
    4. Senate: The Senate of Izmir University of Economics,

    ğ)    University/IUE: Izmir University of Economics,

    1.  MP: The minor program which academically successful undergraduate students at IUE are additionally enrolled in,

    ı)     School Director: Director of School within Izmir University of Economics.

     

    Basis

    Article 4- (1) This Regulation has been prepared on the basis of provisions of IUE Regulation for Associate and Undergraduate Degree Education and Examinations, which took effect after being published in the Official Gazette No. 28536, dated 22 January 2013, and the Regulation for Student Transfer Between Associate Degree and Bachelor's Degree Programs, Double Major and Minor Programs and Course Credit Transfers Between Institutions of Higher Education published in the Official Gazette No. 27561, dated 24 April 2010.

    Minor Program (MP)

    Article 5 – (1) Quotas for Minor Programs are set by the Senate upon the recommendation of the faculty/school boards concerned.

    (2) A Minor Program consists of at least 30 ECTS credits.

    (3) A separate transcript is issued for Minor Program. Semester and cumulative grade point averages are calculated separately.

     

    Application and Terms of Admission

     

    Article 6 – (1) Students must be at the beginning of their third semester earliest, or at the beginning of their sixth semester latest in their major program in order to be eligible to apply to MP.

    (2) The application quotas and terms are announced by the faculties/schools before the application dates, and applications are taken on the dates specified in the academic calendar.

    (3) To be eligible for a MP, a student has to take and successfully pass courses with at least 50 ECTS at the end of the spring semester of freshman year, at least 75 ECTS at the end of fall semester of sophomore year, at least 110 ECTS at the end of the spring semester of sophomore year, and with at least 135 ECTS at the end of fall semester of junior year; and obtain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50 over 4.00.

    (4) Applications are evaluated by the administrative boards of the program concerned.

    (5) The annual number of new students to be admitted to DMP and MP are determined by the Senate upon the recommendation of faculty/school boards on the condition that the quota of double major programs (excluding law, medicine, health, and engineering programs) cannot be less than 20% of the quota of the programs.

    (6) In determining the total quota for departments/programs to do minor at, quotas can be determined on the basis of faculty/school upon the recommendation of boards concerned. In the event of faculty/school quota not being filled in the respective year/semester, the available quota can be filled with students from other faculties/schools based on success rating.

     

    Enrollment

    Article 7-(1) MP applications are reviewed, and the decision regarding the admission is finalized by the administrative board of the faculties/schools concerned.  

    (2) Students, who qualify to enroll to MP, need to enroll on the dates announced.

    (3) Students are allowed enroll to DMP and MP at the same time. 

     

    Implementation

    Article 8-

    (1) The Minor Programs are carried out by the respective department concerned.

    (2) The Head of the department/director of the school concerned appoints a “Minor Program Coordinator” to assist the students in choosing the courses they will take in the MP and planning the semesters in which these courses will be taken. The MP Coordinator guides the students by communicating with the students’ major program advisor.

    (3) The courses to be taken in MP are determined by the department concerned. They are approved by the Senate upon the proposal of the administrative board of the faculties/schools concerned.

    (4) Students, who are accepted to Minor Program must take and pass the courses determined by the Senate. The approval of the MP Coordinator is required for courses the students take. Students may take more courses than the anticipated credits within the MP. Students are obliged to be successful in the additional courses they take.

    (5) The course load the student is required to take during a semester is specified in IUE Regulation for Associate and Undergraduate Degree Education and Examinations published in the Official Gazette No. 28536, dated 22 January 2013.

     

    Leave of Absence

    Article 9-(1) Students, who defer registration in the major program, are also excused from the DP.

    (2) In the event that students fail to take MP course(s) due to not being offered and/or conflicting with other courses, they can be granted a semester leave from the MP with the decision of the administrative board of the faculty/school concerned.

    (3)  (Add SD 01.06.2022-470-2022-14-C/1/ BTD 23.06.2022-68) Students, who have completed MP courses without qualifying to graduate from the major program and whose MP grade point average is at least 2.00, are considered on leave in the semester following the semester they completed the courses.

    (4) Add SD 01.06.2022-470-2022-14-C/1/ BTD 23.06.2022-68) Students who qualify to graduate from the major program but have not completed the MP and are given a maximum of two additional semesters with the decision of the relevant faculty/school administrative boards, can be considered on leave for only one semester of the two additional semesters given if the reason they provide is approved by the relevant faculty/school administrative boards. This semester, in which the student is considered to be on leave, is not included in the calculation of the two additional semesters given.

    Success, Graduation, and Disenrollment

    Article 10- (1) (Change SD 01.06.2022-470-2022-14-C/1/ BTD 23.06.2022-68) A Minor Program Certificate is granted to a student, who took and passed all the MP courses he/she enrolled, completed internship successfully, if any, obtained a grade point average of at least 2.00, and met all the other requirements. MP certificate is not given until the student qualifies to graduate from the major program.  

    (2) Students, who are eligible to graduate in a major program, but have not completed the minor program, can be given an extension for two semesters the most by the decision of the administrative board of the faculty/school concerned.

    (3) On the condition that a Minor Program is available in the respective field and the admission requirements stated in the Regulation for Minor Programs are met, students leaving Double Major Program can transfer to Minor Program free of quota requirement. In this case, courses taken in Double Major Program, which are in Minor Program instruction plan, are transferred to Minor transcript. A student who withdraws from DMP may receive Minor Program Certificate if s/he meets all the requirements of a MP.

    (4) Courses taken in the MP by students who withdraw from the program and are accepted to the DMP providing that they comply with the requirements, can be accepted in the Double Major Program.

    (5) A student can request to withdraw from a Minor Program, however, they cannot enroll in the same MP again.

    (6) Students, whose cumulative grade point average drops below 2.29 over 4.00 in the major program, will be dismissed from the MP.

    (7) Students, who do not take courses for two consecutive semesters without being granted a leave of absence, will be dismissed from the MP.

    (8) Successful courses, upon the request of the student, who is dismissed from the program whatever the reason may be, and approval of the advisor, are transferred to the major transcript without being included in the GPA, and they are marked as (NI).

     

     

    Other Provisions

    Article 11- (1) Students in Minor Program are not charged additional fee for MP courses as long as they continue their studies in major program. Scholarships/discounts of students, who qualify to graduate but granted additional period of two semesters because they could not complete MP, continue for two semesters at the same rate.  

     

     

    (2) Students are charged for MP courses taken in Summer School. The Board of Trustees determines the fees of the courses offered in Summer School each year.

     

     

    Repealed Regulation

    ARTICLE 12 – (1) The Minor Program Regulation, which took effect with the Senate decision No. 154-A12, dated 14 July 2010, and the Board of Trustees decision No. 68/10, dated 3 August 202010 has been repealed.

    Article 12/A: (1) Add SD 01.06.2022-470-2022-14-C/1/ BTD 23.06.2022-68) This regulation can be amended with the decision of the Izmir University of Economics Senate.

    Effectiveness

    Article 13- (1) This regulation takes effect on the date it is approved by the Board of Trustees of Izmir University of Economics.

     

    Enforcement

    Article 14- (1) The Rector of the Izmir University of Economics enforces the provisions of this regulation.

     

     

     

    This regulation took effect with the Senate decision No. 380-A/15, dated 8 January 2020, and the Board of Trustees decision No. 31, dated 15 January 2020.
