EDUCATION AND EVALUATION PRINCIPLES REGARDING COMPULSORY SECOND FOREIGN LANGUAGES TO BE IMPLEMENTED AT DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION AND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION (ENGLISH) (1ST YEAR STUDENTS STARTING EDUCATION AS OF 2020-2021 ACADEMIC YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME)


  1. SECOND FOREIGN LANGUAGE SELECTION AND EDUCATION

 

  1. Students,  in these departments, are obliged to take the compulsory French or Italian courses given by the School of Foreign Languages ​​for 4 years.

 

  1. The second foreign language, which is compulsory in these departments, can be changed at the end of the first year to take the other compulsory language for one time only, regardless of the success or failure in the course and the grade point average. When students make this change, they agree that their education period will be longer.

 

  1. Compulsory second foreign language course from a previous semester is a prerequisite for the compulsory second foreign language course of the next semester. Grade of at least DD in Second Foreign Language course from a previous semester must be obtained to enroll to compulsory second foreign language courses.

 

  1. Starting from the third year, students can take a third foreign language from the other languages ​​offered by the School of Foreign Languages ​​for 4 semesters, in addition to a compulsory second foreign language they will be taking.

 

 

 

  1. EXEMPTION REQUIREMENTS

 

  1. The compulsory second foreign language courses offered for these departments are not equivalent to the second foreign language courses offered by SFL.

 

  1. An exemption exam is conducted at the beginning of each semester only for students who meet the below criteria for compulsory second foreign language courses they have not taken before:
  1. To be a citizen of the country in which the compulsory second foreign language selected is spoken,    or to be born in that country.
  2. To have a high school diploma of the country in which the compulsory second foreign language selected is spoken.
  3. To have graduated from a high school teaching in the second compulsory foreign language selected.

 

  1. Students, who want to be exempt from Compulsory Second Foreign Language courses, can take one exemption exam for the respective semester at the beginning of each semester (excluding summer semester).

 

  1. Students, who have taken this course before and failed, cannot enter the exemption exams.

 

  1. Exemption exam is made up of three stages:


a) Written Exam: Students, who score at least 70 in the written exam, qualify to take the Written Translation Exam and Oral Exam.

b) Written Translation Exam

c) Oral Exam

 

The result of the exemption exam is calculated by taking the 50% of the written exam, 25% of the written translation exam, and the 25% of the oral exam. Exemption exam passing grade in compulsory second foreign language program is minimum of 80 (BB).

 

It is mandatory to attend all stages of the exam, in order to be successful in the exemption exam.

 

  1. When students submit their B1 and above certificates, they are exempted from the compulsory second foreign language courses they are obliged to take by issuing an “AA” grade on their transcripts.

 

  1. The names of ALTE exams and equivalent exams at level B1 and above that can be considered for exemption are stated below. Exams, not included in this list, are not considered.

These principles entered into force with the decision of the Senate dated 10.09.2020 and numbered 410-A/7 and the decision of the Board of Trustees dated 29.09.2020 and numbered 44.
